unival group is expanding its security screening portfolio through a collaboration with MION Technologies, adding VPScan, a non-intrusive vapour-detection solution for the detection and identification of explosives, cocaine and other illicit substances.
VPScan provides an additional detection capability for security operations involving cargo, containers, trucks and other environments where rapid screening is required without opening the item being screened.
How VPScan works
The system uses a two-stage process consisting of vapour sampling followed by automated analysis. Air samples can be collected from large containers or trucks in approximately three minutes without opening them. The complete screening process, including sampling and analysis, takes approximately six minutes.
The portable sampling concept allows operators to collect air samples directly from the object being screened. Containers and trucks therefore do not need to be moved to a dedicated inspection system.
Detection performance
According to MION Technologies, VPScan achieves a limit of detection of 0.01 ppq and is designed to detect low vapour-pressure substances, including cocaine and plastic explosives.
MION also reports a detection rate above 90 percent and a false alarm rate below 2 percent. The analysis provides automatic results without requiring human interpretation.
Screening applications
Beyond trucks and containers, the technology can be used across different screening scenarios, including pallets, Unit Load Devices, vans and mail.
This capability complements the existing unival group screening and inspection portfolio and extends the detection options available for applications across ports, borders, logistics operations, cargo screening and critical infrastructure.
